Issue 5 dedicated to Linda Pace
We received tons of response for this issue of NeoAztlan albeit most of it from Europe. Thanks to those of you who sent us your kind words.
Beat Streuli and Kevin Estrada operate in completely different realms as far as photography, but it was interesting to bring a rock star of contemporary art photography who captures images of every day people together with a sort of every day person who captures images of rock stars.
To both of their credit, they are both humble and genuinely nice people and we’re honored they are part of the project.
For Issue 5, we are working on interviews with Italian architectural contemporary artist Monica Bonvicini and Mexican indie band, Carrie. Another interview will be announced shortly.
Bonvicini’s work deals with issues of gender and architecture while Carrie’s music suggests a little Postal Service with some Cocteau Twins and Bel Canto thrown in. Carrie’s debut release is one of the best I’ve heard in a long time.
Look for Issue 5 at the end of June.
In other news, we’re currently in contract talks with artist/writer Michelle Valdez and writer Ben Judson about becoming regular contributors to NeoAztlan. We’re hung up on private jet, signing bonus, and salary cap issues, but if all goes well, they should bring the more in-depth/critical approach that NeoAztlan needs.
In other NeoAztlan news, Issue 5 will feature Kate Green’s interview with Monica Bonvicini. In the meantime, read Artforum’s interview to learn more about her work here.
NeoAztlan Issue 4 launches today with Kate Green’s interview with Brussels-based photographer, Beat Streuli. Streuli has been in solo exhibitions in such notable contemporary art galleries and institutions as Murray Guy (New York), Galerie Erna Hécey (Brussels), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), and the Tate Gallery (London), among others.
He has also been in group exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art (San Francsico), The Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo), and The Museum of Modern Art (New York), just to name a few.
Streuli has also been interviewed for and/or featured in virtually every prominent art publication and in publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The New Yorker, and Artforum, to name a few.
We’re exremely fortunate to have him as part of this issue.
Also in the works and perhaps as a parallel to the interview with Streuli is a last-minute interview with rock photographer Kevin Estrada who discusses American pop culture and the corporate music industry. Estrada is an extremely sought-after commissioned photographer in the music industry having photographed personalities such as Kurt Cobain, Robert Smith, David Bowie, Perry Farrell, and Joe Strummer, among many others. He’s documented some extremely important times in music history. Go to his Web site to see some of his work: http://www.kevinestrada.com/
The interview with Kevin was last-minute, but he graciously agreed to do it in between editing sessions of the latest music video he’s directing. It will publish at NeoAztlan as soon as it’s ready.
